WWI – Trench Experience

World War I began in 1914 following the assassination of Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip. The conflict initially pitted Austria and Germany against Serbia and Russia, soon drawing in France (invaded through Belgium) and Great Britain along with its empire. The Central Powers also included Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire, while the Allied powers eventually grew to include Italy (1915) and the United States (1917), ultimately encompassing 28 nations by the war’s conclusion in 1918.
